The Finsimco Porter’s 5 Forces Simulation places students in the role of strategy analysts evaluating industry attractiveness, competitive pressure, and long-term profit potential using one of the most widely taught strategy frameworks. It is part of Finsimco’s portfolio of ultra-realistic work simulations used for training and assessment, developed by former Morgan Stanley investment bankers and trusted by over 500 universities globally. Undergraduate Programs Postgraduate Programs This simulation follows a “learning by doing” approach; no prior knowledge is required. However, a basic understanding of competitive strategy is recommended. Students are assigned to teams; each team assumes one of 2 roles: Each role has a distinct perspective on industry attractiveness, competitive pressure, and strategic risk. The simulation guides students through 2 phases: Phase 1: Industry Analysis Phase 2: Investment Committee The simulation concludes with students defending their recommendation and reflecting on how industry structure, competitive forces, and strategic positioning influence long-term profit potential. Different teams negotiate in parallel, making it possible to compare outcomes across negotiation groups and support more objective grading. The minimum duration is 3 hours, including introduction, preparation, industry analysis, strategy submission, and debrief. Educators can extend the simulation for presentations, debate, or deeper case analysis. Team-based, 2-5 students per team. Minimum 12 students, no maximum. The simulation can be delivered in a single session, across multiple classes, as homework, or in a hybrid format. Educators simply press “play” to start the simulation, which guides students through all stages. Coaching is optional, and lecturers can monitor progress via the admin dashboard. Student inputs and performance are displayed in the lecturer dashboard. A portion of the grade can be based on leaderboard performance. A Finsimco team member can be available online on standby during your first session if required.
